Earth Day Project (April 28th):  We will be participating in an earth day project in conjunction with a national event with Syracuse University on April 28th. The event will take place from 10:00 to 12:30 (rain or shine) and lunch will be served at the end. I have spoken with the coordinator and she will assign us together but I must provide her with a list by the end of next week. You must register for the event for coordinating purposes and for lunch. Please go to http://earthday.syr.edu.  Let me know if you have questions but I will be out of town until Thursday April 26th. We will be meeting at the Westcott Community Center, 826 Euclid Ave. at 10:00 am.

Paintball!!!!!!! (May 6th):  I have scheduled our paintball event for Sunday May 6th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Remember you will need to pay for the activity and your parents will need to sign waivers when they drop you off.  Please let me know if you will be attending sometime before May 4th.

 Recap of March 25th Meeting

Adopt a Soldier Project: Our donations for the troop project was once again a big success, however, attendance was disappointing especially considering the impact our donations have on the soldiers who are fighting the war.

Nick, Asia, Rachel, Mindy, and Kaitlyn took the project to heart and were successful in collecting donations from local businesses, family, and neighbors. Nick, who collected $65 from Nichol’s in Liverpool, will purchase items with the money he collected.  We plan on sending the donation to Ben Tupper who has had the most contact with the group and is stationed in Afghanistan.

The activities that were organized by ROTC were a great morale booster and were enjoyed by all that participated. Those who attended are asked to send a quick THANK YOU e-mail to Cadets Donovan Groh (Donovan.groh@gmail.com) and Steven Flagg (smflagg@syr.edu) preferably this week. You are to copy me so I know you did this (dmproia@syr.edu).

At the end of the meeting we discussed our upcoming remaining projects (global warming and day camp) and a fun activity (paintball).

Attending the meeting were Kaitlyn, Sarah, Crystal, Mindy, Chad, Asia, Nick, Josh, and Hunter.

Global warming project: Each teen is to send letters to their congress person to express their concern over the issue. We are also planting trees at a local park or community area which has tentatively been scheduled for April 28th. Details, example letters and addresses are to follow. With regard to the letter writing, if this is not something you want to do I may assign a petition campaign instead of letters. These or copies of your letters are to be handed in to me at the event. I will be asking for a minimum of 50 signatures from each who decides not to write a letter.  If you have not watched “An Inconvenient Truth” this is still assigned.

Day camp:  We further discussed the day camp project and I expressed my and other members concerns regarding its facilitation due to participation. A letter was sent home with the teens at the meeting to parents expressing these concerns. Those who did not attend will be receiving the letter in the mail. Parents are to contact me to discuss its content no later than April 1st

*Cancelled/Postponed*

Being optimistic that the project will go on as planned the following responsibilities have been assigned and groups are forming to complete specific tasks. If you have not volunteered or been assigned to a group, I need to know what your preferences are as far as the activities ASAP. Please note that the first members to contact me with regard to their preference will be taken into consideration. Each group should appoint a leader who is to provide me with ongoing weekly progress report. We all agreed as a group that this project is not one whereby you can simply show up but one that will take preplanning and practice.

Major Service Project:

Pirates Day at Camp for Underprivileged Children

(May 2006)

Per the suggestion of Mindy, the group decided to offer a day at Camp Talooli for a yet to be determined group of  4-6 year olds. In order to define a particular group of children who could benefit from this project, Nick is going to check with his step mom who is a social worker and Dawn will contact local school districts and Oswego County Head Start schools for potential candidates. We are also going to try to secure funding for the day by applying for a grant.

The theme of the day will be Pirate day based on the story of Peter Pan and Neverland.  Members are asked to dress as pirates. Nick has offered to be Captain Hook, but we still need a Peter Pan (boy or girl) and maybe a Tinkerbell.

Tentative planning of the day includes:

An opening presentation possibly in the form of a play or puppet show.

Arts and crafts where the children can make a pirate hat and/or a parrot (Emily will find out the instructions for making the parrot).

A planned lunch for the children and their families.

An age appropriate challenge course designed for the children.

Nature walk designed to include a treasure hunt

(hopefully Mark can help us with this).

Supervised fishing (dependant upon the age of the children)

or another outdoor activity.  A closing ceremony whereby Peter Pan with the help of the children find a yet to be determined item.

The above list of ideas is not necessarily all inclusive. As we formulate the day, we will be able to plan it out in more detail. Periodic meetings will be held to define objectives and teams will be formed to focus on individual aspects. This is a complex yet manageable project and one that will not only be fun but offer a wonderful opportunity to these children.  We need full participation of all members to make this work.

Please note:  The project will encompass an entire weekend at camp beginning Friday night:

Friday night:  We will prepare for the children and finish preparing the next morning.

Saturday: We will host the day per the above objectives. After the children have left, we will have dinner and a bonfire at which time we will reflect upon our day and its impact on the children, what went well and what could have been done better, and it influence upon each member.

Sunday:  We will assist in helping prepare the camp for opening this summer.

 Global Warming Service Project

(Date:  To Be Determined)

We have yet to define more narrowly what course we will take but Nick has suggested that the group do something to address the issue of global warming. In order to determine the focus we will take, each member has been asked to view the Al Gore film, “An Inconvenient Truth.”

Members have been instructed to research this issue on the web to see if we can connect with another local organization that is currently conducting projects addressing global warming.

Adopt a Soldier Service Project

Date: March 25th 1:00 - 4:00 pm

Location: Syracuse University Archbold North, Room 202

Due to the success of the fall service project for which we received national recognition from Camp Fire USA Council; the fact that the troops will not be coming home soon; and, the importance of the impact we made on the soldiers, the group has decided to make this an ongoing service project with a tentative mailing date of just before Easter.

This time we have also decided to illicit more involvement from the community for support. Nick, Asia, and Rachel have volunteered to check with the Liverpool Wegmans to see if boxes can be set up to collect items per the ROTC list. We would also like to set up boxes for collecting Silly String, which helps to promote that safety of our troops, and Beanie Babies for the children of Afghanistan or Iraq. Kaitlyn and Emily will do the same at the Great Northern Wegmans.

Members will also ask for contributions from friends and family members as well as possibly asking parents if they can set up a box for contributions at their offices.  We have decided to once again include personalized boxes for the soldier but this time using shoe boxes.

ROTC has already agreed to help us coordinate the mailing and will be conducting a team building project with the group on March 25th which is the day we come together to assemble the packages.  This meeting will in all likelihood be held once again at Syracuse University.

Habitat for Humanity Project

(Date: TBA)

The group discussed possibly working with Habitat for Humanity on helping decorate a child’s room or other project. Dawn is going to check with the organization to see what is involved and if this is indeed a possibility. If so, we will need to define what we will do, what we will need, and how it will be funded. This project might be conducted during spring break for those not going on the trip.

Fun, Fun, Fun!!!

Laser Tag at Shoppingtown Mall

Date: March 23rd 7:00 - 11:00 pm

Location: The Fun Junction, Shoppingtown Mall Dewitt

Price is $18 for an all night pass. Per Brian, space is on a first come first serve basis and it sells out. I would strongly advise you get there by 6:30 if possible. I need to know if you are coming so it doesn’t hold up the group. Please RSVP no later than March 18th.

April:  Paintball at Extreme Action Sports.  Last fall the group played paintball and had a great time. As a result they are anxious to play again. In light of the fact that some members are going on the Virgin Island trip tentative dates are April 22nd or April 29th. All members are encouraged to participate as the more the merrier.

May/June:  I would like to schedule a family picnic so all the families can get together again and the members can share their experiences and thoughts regarding their year. Preferably this will be held after the Day Camp weekend.  I will keep you posted as to the date as we approach the end of the year.

As always, please offer any other suggestions as to possible fun events. Also remember that you are responsible for paying for the fees associated with the event and getting there and back.

Service Project

Saturday, December 9th

Birchwood Healthcare Center

(1:15 - 3:15)

Our next service project will be held on Saturday, December 9th at the Birchwood Healthcare Center located at 4800 Bear Road. Please arrive no later than 1:15. The project was coordinated by Asia whose Aunt Dottie works there as the activities coordinator.   We will be joining and assisting the elderly in an afternoon of BINGO.

As some of you have indicated that your lives have given you little opportunity to interact with the elderly this provides you with such an opportunity. Plus it will be fun.  I needed a response by last week, but if you have not read the e-mail or responded please do so A.S.A.P.

Fun Activity - Cosmic Bowling

*Postponed until January*

Flamingo Lanes, Liverpool

Due to circumstances bowling will have to be postponed until a later date.  Probably until some time in January.

Service Project

Christmas Caroling - Phoenix

December 17th (evening)

Jan Peneston recently advised me of an opportunity for the singers in our group to join the Phoenix chorus in an evening of Christmas caroling. The event will take place on Sunday December 17th starting in the evening.  If you are interested, please contact Jan at jan@campfireusacny.org for more details.

Next Planning Meeting

Sunday, January 21

53 Ainslee Drive, Pennellville

(1:00 – 4:00)

I have spoken with a few of you with regard to planning upcoming events. When we began the year, I felt it would be beneficial to conduct smaller projects to get your feet wet and time for us, meaning the group, to get to know each other.  I must say, I have been very happy with all of your progress and what you have accomplished to date.

Going forward things will be handled a little differently. While we will continue to take on smaller projects such as the Valentines for Vets, we will also plan out one to possibly three major service projects depending upon the complexity of the projects. These projects will entail a higher degree of planning, establishing funding, detailed execution or delivery, and reflection.

Our first major planning meeting will take place on January 7th and will be held at my home. Since this will be a mandatory meeting, I will need to know A.S.A.P if you can not attend hence the reason why I am giving you plenty of notice.

It will also give you plenty of time to think about and research the following. Each of you is to reflect on what we have done to date.

You are to talk to family, friends, and/or members of your school and local community in an effort to identify a problem or need that exists in your community.  Please see the following websites for an example. http://www.teenroadskill.org/mission.php  Please know that we will be following this format as it is part of the national Teens in Action planning guide. Our project need not be this complex but should follow the ideas outlined by this group.

You are to think of possible solutions to the problem or a way of addressing the need. For example: education, providing resources or assistance to the group, or planning an event from which the identified group would benefit. Please see what other Teens in Action groups are doing by Googling “Camp Fire” + “Teens in Action” on the web. I think you will be amazed at what some groups are taking on.

You are each to come to the meeting prepared to discuss your findings and to make a recommendation. If you have friends in the group and wish to work together that is fine. From the needs/problems presented, the group will decide on what service project(s) we will take on for the upcoming months. Please bring in a list or printouts, if possible, of what you have identified. Once the group has deciding on the project(s), leadership teams will be formed to carry out specific tasks to accomplish our goal.

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CALL ME IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS
