About Summer Camp Staff

Confession time... Sometimes (especially during the cold winter months) I find myself flipping through the pages of my calendar, counting the days and weeks until another season of summer camp begins.  Today happened to be one of those days, so I thought that I would share my results with you. The first day campers arrive at Talooli a mere 17 weeks from now!! Exciting, right?!

One of our biggest jobs between now and then will be to assemble the best possible collection of incredible camp counselors and innovative program staff. I call this a big job, because it is no easy feat. Summer camp staff members have to be skilled enough to demonstrate leadership at camp, responsible enough to take care of other people’s children, and brave enough to be willing to put themselves out there and try new things. Furthermore, summer camp staff MUST exude a sense of childlike fun that so often has our staff being painted during color wars, dressing up in ridiculous costumes, getting soaked by buckets of water, and remembered in the hearts of children for years to come.

With generally more than 85% of staff returning from one summer to the next, Camp Talooli is fortunate to have an incredibly passionate and skilled group of young people working with us each summer. Any new hires to Talooli generally come directly out of our three-year counselor-in-training program.

On the topic of camp staff, I thought I would share with you some reflections made by staff at the end of the summer of 2012:

I had an amazing summer and I feel like the staff really supported one another and grew as a family.

I had an amazing time working this year. This was definitely one of the best summers I have had and I am looking forward to coming back next year.

I had a great experience. My most memorable moment at camp was when I had a camper roast a marshmallow for the first time and watching her reaction.

This summer was filled with challenges, but I tried to handle them the best way I knew how. I had an amazing summer and made tons of new friends. I will be forever grateful.

My experience this summer was better than I imagined it. I met so many kids and felt like I made a difference in their lives.

I love the feeling that is accompanied with watching a young child that's new to camp fall into their comfort zone. I had a very positive experience and can't wait for next summer.

Until next time,

Kelly

  • Kelly you nailed it! I do this alot myself. I talk to campers/staff from years ago, and to this day we talk about things at camp like the brush, Gary's coffee, The "yip yip" (that realy anoyed the camp director at the time), I could go on and on and on for hours. I realy miss talooli, I would not be who i am, or where I am without camp! It shaped who I am. Continue to make memories in a happy gathering place!
